How painful are lower back tattoos?
Nicole asked:
I just scheduled an appointment to have a tattoo done on the left side of my lower back. Its about 3×2. From what I hear, tattoos hurt less in areas with more fat but I am very skinny. Also, I heard lower back tattoos hurt a lot when they go over the spine, but since mine is on the left side, will it be that bad?

i have a lower back tattoo its very painful yes but in other words can you stay under a needle for 2 or 3 hours? on my spine i felt like a knife craving inside me. But dont mean to scare you, but you will see when you do it then it will be common sense. best wishes and best of luck i wanna give you some advice im a female ok i have 5 tattoos i have a huge one on my back a corset that goes almost down to my lower back tattoo neways try to get it smaller in size so you dont get sick of it and its in a great place though cute but do not go over board like me then you will regret your tattoos. again best of luck

I have a lower back tattoo but I got it about 4 years ago so I really can’t say if the pain was too bad, I don’t remember it being that bad.

3in x 2 in doesn’t sound like much. Maybe an hour or more depending on detail.
Tattoo’s anywhere tend to hurt–the only difference is how you personally perceive the pain. When I got my stomach tattoo, the area near my hip was the least painful, the part in the center was the most brutal–which is contrary to what I had been told to expect. I don’t think anything we can tell you will give you a completely accurate way of knowing how much it will hurt. What I tell most people is to scratch a pencil across your skin firmly–and see how long you can take that without wanting it to stop. Usually not long–in my experience, the tattoo was like that–an abrasive irritating pain.

The thing about a tattoo hurting less on fat is a big and flat out myth. It depends on how many nerve endings there are the the area that is being tattooed. I was told my my friend who happens to be a tattoo artist that the further in the fleshy part of you side you go the worse it hurts because of the organs that sit there. If you want a tattoo then get one. Don’t let the fear of the pain stop you because the pain only last for a little while, the tattoo is there forever.
