Lower back tattoos and having children later in life?
tabs asked:
I’m thinking of getting a lower back tattoo. I heard that if you get one that if you have kids later, you can’t have an epidoral while giving birth. Is it true? If you get one there does it stretch badly if you gain or lose weight?

Not true about the epidural. I have a giant tatt on my lower back- solid black where they put the epidural in. There was no trouble at all. I even asked the doc if there would be since I heard the same thing and he told me that was a myth.
Tatts really don’t stretch bad unless you gain tons of weight-and most people don’t gain tons in their lower back during pregnancy anyways.

I have tattoos on my lower back and still was able to have an epidural. I here they stretch if you gain a lot of weight. I gained 33 lbs with pregnancy and mine are totally fine, I lost all the weight and am back to normal. Go for it!

there is nothing that will prevent you from getting an epidural as related to a tattoo except if your tattoo was fresh… which you shouldn’t have a fresh tattoo if you are about to give birth to a child. some doctors are hesitant to give an epidural for fear of messing up the tattoo but there is NO TRUTH to what people say about ink getting into your spinal fluid. it’s just false. ( i have a full back tattoo and i have done the research, tho i have not had an epidural (don’t have kids) when i DO have kids i plan on not having an epi anyway but there is nothing keeping me from it except my own strong will and determination to do what God made my body to do)
as for stretching and stuff related to weight gain… nobody can really tell you that because everybody is different. some people gain weight only in their bellies and some blow up all over. i would guess that if you ate right and exercised during pregnancy and didn’t turn into a whale your tattoo would not stretch out and look bad after pregnancy but there are no guarantees.
good luck!

That is not true. You can still get an epidural, plenty of women do it. And no that area does not usually stretch which is why it’s so great. I mean if you put on 100 pounds or drop so much that your skin can’t shrink down yeah it will be affected but normal weight gain and loss doesn’t change that too much.

The back does not really pick up weight during pregnancy. Dont worry, you can still have an epidural. I have three kids and have had three epidurals with a hip to hip tattoo on my back.
